Do Your Actions Match Your Goals?

Writer: Robin BourdeauRobin Bourdeau

You may have heard the saying “Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.” Our logical mind knows we must take a different approach in order to get different results. The reality, though, is that we all fall into routines and get comfortable. We settle in to a pattern that may have worked for a period of time, but times change. People change.

It’s time to take a look at where you are right now and determine if you are still making progress toward your goals. If you are, great! This exercise can serve to refine your routine and keep you focused. If not, this exercise will help you determine areas you will need to update in order to align with your goals.

Step 1 - Write down your goals at the top of a piece of paper or word document. Draw a line down the center of the page, or create a table with two columns. The first column is for your actions / meals. The second columns is for the goal your actions / meals align to.

Step 2 - Take some quiet time to write down what your average day looks like. Be detailed, and be specific.

Step 3 - For each thing you do / each meal you eat, write the goal next to it that applies. If the action / meal does not apply to a specific goal, leave it blank.

Step 4 - Take a look at how many blank spaces you have, and identify between one and three areas where you can change the routine / meal in order to align with one of your goals.

NOTE: Picking between one to three items to address is manageable. Once you have created the new habits, you can add in more. You do not need to change everything all at once.
